Diabetes UK Scotland welcomes the recent announcement from Nicola Sturgeon, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing that additional funding is to be given to tackle Scotland's obesity epidemic. In the Scottish Parliament, the Government announced an £40 million package over the next three years to drive through health improvements, with a particular focus on obesity.Diabetes UK Scotland Director, Audrey Birt, said, "This is certainly a step in the right direction.

Australia Must Follow British Lead On Obesity - AMA PDF Print E-mail

The AMA says the Australian Government must match Britain's determination to tackle its obesity crisis by adopting a national obesity strategy. The British Government this week announced it would commit 372 million pounds over three years to a major cross-government strategy to fight the obesity epidemic in Britain. AMA President, Dr Rosanna Capolingua, said that a similar national plan to combat obesity is needed in Australia.

If obesity among the young continues at the current rate, it is estimated that one fifth of boys and one third of girls will be obese by the year 2020. But a new CD Rom is to be launched to offer advice and support to West Midlands health workers faced with the rising tide of childhood obesity. The University of Wolverhampton has secured funding of £20,000 from the West Midlands Strategic Health Authority (SHA) to develop the CD Rom and its content.
