scaresdale.jpgThe Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet is a book by Scarsdale, New York physician Dr. Herman Tarnower and Samm Sinclair Baker, originally published in 1979. The book became a bestseller and (as of 2006) was still in print. The "Scarsdale Diet," a low-carbohydrate, low-calorie weight-loss diet, is still popular today.

The Scarsdale Diet specifies a very specific diet which is supposed to be followed exactly. A grapefruit for breakfast each day is meant to supply enzymes necessary for burning the 700-calorie per day diet. Artificial sweeteners are used in place of sugar. The diet is to be followed for 7 or 14 days, alternating with a less rigorous regime.

Critics acknowledge that the diet gives quick results, but say that weight loss on the plan results simply from the reduced caloric intake; is mostly water; is quickly regained; and that the diet is so extreme as to be unhealthy, however many followers of the diet report positive results. The book received an unexpected boost in sales when its author Dr. Tarnower was murdered on March 10, 1980, by his long-time lover Jean Harris, the headmistress of The Madeira School for girls in McLean, Virginia, a fashionable boarding school for high school girls.

The murder was the subject of a 2006 made-for-TV movie called Mrs. Harris. In 2005, the American-based Food Network listed the Scarsdale diet as number two of its top five food fads of the 1970s. Recent years have proved the diet to be most popular in southern France, where up to 10% of people have used the diet in the past 7 years.

The original low carb diet. The “Scarsdale Diet” is a two week, low fat, low carbohydrate, high protein diet. The “Scarsdale Diet” seems more healthy in our opinion than Atkins, in that the “Scarsdale Diet” includes some complex carbohydrates such as bread and fruits. For more than 40 years, Dr Herman Tarnower warned his patients to eat sensibly and stay trim. When they complained that diets didn’t work, he decided to find a diet that would work. After years of research and medical trials he founded the Scarsdale Medical Centre and developed a weight loss program that he believed was simple, safe and fast.

The “Scarsdale Diet” offers answers to a range of diet and health questions, and contains five complete 14-day menu plans, a lifetime keep slim program and guidance on a range of medical problems that are affected by diet. Numerous doctors and health experts have stepped forward in recent years to publish books that attempt to describe how their specific diet plan is better than the others. In “The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet” Dr. Tarnower does exactly this. Dr. Tarnower claims that the “Scarsdale Diet” is the most popular diet ever discovered, and the he explains exactly how the “Scarsdale Diet” works and how you can achieve your weight loss goals. He claims that by learning the “Scarsdale Diet” you will be able to drop up to 20 pounds in two weeks. He claims that the “Scarsdale Diet” has miraculous results, will allow you to keep the weigh off, and to have a lean, healthy body for life. The “Scarsdale Diet” is basically another lower carbohydrate, low fat, and higher protein diet.

The basis of the “Scarsdale Diet” plan is eliminating most carbohydrates and limiting your intake of others. The carbohydrates that are allowed to be consumed in limited quantities with the “Scarsdale Diet” are mainly natural whole grain carbohydrates. The diet requires limited fat intake, bit not to dangerously low levels. The “Scarsdale Diet” follows an interval plan of following the diet routine for two weeks, followed by a period of not following the diet plan. This cycle is said to optimize results and to prevent your body from adjusting to the diet regimen. Many lower carbohydrate and high proteins have and induction period, but this two week cycle is somewhat unique. This is a basic weight loss plan for adults who have no special dietary needs or problems. The “Scarsdale Diet” is a diet plan of seven to fourteen days in duration.

The diet clearly outlines the types of foods to be consumed at three meals each day. Snacking is not allowed, and herbal appetite suppressants are encouraged. Meals consist of fruit, vegetables, and lean sources of protein in unlimited amounts. The “Scarsdale Diet” like other low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets, eliminates foods that are high in fiber and many nutrients in favor of quick weight loss. You have to eat exactly what is assigned. You should not drink any alcoholic beverages. Between meals you eat only carrots and celery, but you may have as much as you wish. The only beverages allowed are regular or decaffeinated coffee, black; tea; club soda (with lemon, if desired); and diet sodas in all flavors.
